How did you start CrossFit?
I first heard of CrossFit from an old college friend around 2010. Naturally, working in R&D, I read and watched as much as I could find online before getting started and like most, I was a little hesitant when I saw some of the athletes in the CrossFit Games. However, being an engineer, the scientific methodology and data driven approach really spoke to me. So, after getting my “toes wet” for several years doing whatever I could at my local “Globogym”, in my garage, at the park down the street, first once a week…then twice…then three times…I came to 2 realizations. 1) If I really wanted to get better, I was going to need the exceptional value provided by real coaching; and 2) if I was going to sustain my fitness over a lifetime, I was going to need the environment and support provided by a community of like-minded people. In 2014, I went all in…and I’ve loved every minute of it!
What inspired you to become a coach?
I have always believed in the importance of living a life in service to others; call it a sense of duty or responsibility, or whatever term works for you. My career has reflected those values, from the U.S. Coast Guard to the not-for-profit, “service in the public interest” company that I work for now. Coaching was an obvious opportunity to extend that service mindset into another domain. But what it really comes down to is the athletes. Achieving one of your own goals is exciting, sure, but helping someone else achieve theirs is even more rewarding, and then seeing the changes in self-confidence and self-worth that come from an athlete realizing that “YES! You CAN do this!” is the most fulfilling of all.
